Metamex Engineering

Precision CNC turning, milling, fibre laser cutting, and CAD design. Made in Britain, based in Portsmouth. Over 3,800 projects delivered since January 2022.

About

Launched to bring precision machining in-house

Metamex Engineering was established in January 2022 as part of a £250,000 Excell Engineering Group expansion – opened by Penny Mordaunt MP at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on 24 January 2022. The purpose was straightforward: to bring precision CNC machining and laser cutting capabilities in-house, reducing the group's reliance on external suppliers for these processes and giving clients a single, reliable partner for machined components.

Based in Portsmouth and operating as a distinct business within the Excell Engineering Group, Metamex now serves both the wider group and external clients across the UK. Over 3,800 projects have been delivered since opening. Metamex regularly produces precision tooling for Excell Metal Spinning's metal spinning operations – an integration that reflects exactly why the business was founded.

What They Do

Services

Four precision engineering services under one roof. In many cases, a single enquiry to Metamex covers what would otherwise require multiple separate suppliers.

CNC Turning

Precision CNC turning in mild steel, tool steel, and hardened steel. Machine: Colchester Combi 6000 – max diameter 760mm, max length 2,000mm. From single prototypes through to batch production runs. Tolerances from 0.5mm to 1.5mm depending on geometry. Quote turnaround 1 to 2 working days.

CNC Milling

Multi-axis CNC milling across a wide range of metals including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, titanium, and engineering plastics. Machine: YCM EV1020A – 1,020mm X travel, 10,000rpm spindle, positional accuracy to 0.004mm. Complex geometries, jigs, fixtures, brackets, housings, and bespoke structural components.

Fibre Laser Cutting

High-precision fibre laser cutting on a 3,000 x 1,500mm bed using a 1500W fibre laser. Mild steel up to 16mm, stainless steel up to 5mm, aluminium and brass up to 4mm. Clean edges, minimal heat distortion, fast lead times. Laser engraving available as an add-on for part numbers, batch codes, serial numbers, and logos.

CAD Design

A supporting service for clients who know what they need but don't have technical drawings. From a rough sketch, a sample component, or a written description, Metamex produces production-ready designs in Autodesk Fusion 360. Output formats include .f3d, .ipt, .dwg, .dxf, and PDF. Design feeds directly into machining – no handoffs, no delays.

Who They Serve

Industries

Precision machined components are required across virtually every manufacturing sector. Metamex supplies clients across the UK in a broad range of industries, with particular strength in aerospace, automotive, marine, defence, and industrial applications.

Work that reaches further than Portsmouth

As part of the Excell Engineering Group, Metamex's work has supported projects for some of the most recognised names in British and global industry. Precision machined components produced in Portsmouth have ended up in products made for brands including Rolls-Royce, Bosch, Volvo, Williams Advanced Engineering, Dunlop, Vent-Axia, and Pinewood Studios.

Research work has included components for Imperial College London's Solar Orbiter Mission – instruments now aboard a spacecraft studying the Sun's magnetic field. Defence supply has included work classified under JOSCAR-registered supply chains via the wider group.
